The South Pennine Uplands
1977-9
When I first moved to Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, the area was very run down, the buildings were black from industrial pollution and a lot of the farms on the surrounding moors and the textile mills in the valleys had become abandoned. The many footpaths that cut down from the tops through the woods to the early textile mills in the valleys stood testament to an industrial past. As with the Oxfordshire series, I was drawn to explore and photograph the traces that remained.
